Movabletype 4.0 is now open source but can they compete or even regain the number spot as a blogging application?

I say “regain” because MT was once open source, in fact it was once of the best ones out there until they decided to charge for the software and there’s where WordPress came in and basically won the blogging community over and now has a strong userbase.

MT4’s core authoring functions allows you to manage assets with greater ease. A rich web editor offers “What You See Is What You Get” functionality to allow insertion of not just text, but audio, photos, and files as well. And you can easily reuse any of those rich media assets with MT4’s new built-in asset management system

Is Technorati tags usefull to bring traffic to your blog? i haven’t ever used the Technorati tags plugin for this blog or even other blogs that i owned just because i didn’t feel they would be usefull, i guess my hunch was right as i read today on DailyBlogTips that tags might just be pointless.

I quote:

You can guess that at his point I was getting skeptical about the usefulness of the tags. In order to get a more clear picture of the situation I decided to research about the Top 100 Popular blogs on Technorati, and here is the results I gathered:

    * out of the 100 most popular blogs only 7 were using tags in blog posts
* of those who did, 4 were using internal tags (i.e. Tags linking to internal pages)
* only 3 out of 100 were actually using the Technorati Tags (i.e. Linking to Technorati)

Enjoy!

Tech Support: “How much free space do you have on your hard drive?”

Customer: “Well, my wife likes to get up there on that Internet, and she downloaded ten hours of free space. Is that enough?”

- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - –

No, the best way to prepare is to write programs, and to study great programs that other people have written. In my case, I went to the garbage cans at the Computer Science Center and I fished out listings of their operating system.
- Bill Gates

- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - –

Customer: “My computer crashed!”
Tech Support: “It crashed?”
Customer: “Yeah, it won’t let me play my game.”
Tech Support: “All right, hit Control-Alt-Delete to reboot.”
Customer: “No, it didn’t crash-it crashed.”
Tech Support: “Huh?”
Customer: “I crashed my game. That’s what I said before. Now it doesn’t work.”
Turned out, the user was playing Lunar Lander and crashed his spaceship.
Tech Support: “Click on ‘File, ‘ then ‘New Game.’”
Customer: [pause] “Wow! How’d you learn how to do that?”

- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - –

Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning.

Customer: “So that’ll get me connected to the Internet, right?”
Tech Support: “Yeah.”
Customer: “And that’s the latest version of the Internet, right?”
Tech Support: “Uhh…uh…uh…yeah.”

“Unix is user-friendly. It’s just very selective about who its friends are.”

“Programming is like sex, one mistake and you have to support it for the rest of your life.” — Michael Sinz

“There are 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary, and those who don’t.”

“640K ought to be enough for anybody.” – This is not humorous by itself; but in the context it’s a classic by Bill Gates in 1981

Microsoft: “You’ve got questions. We’ve got dancing paperclips.”

“Microsoft is not the answer. Microsoft is the question. NO is the answer.” – Erik Naggum

“People say Microsoft paid 14M$ for using the Rolling Stones song ‘Start me up’ in their commercials. This is wrong. Microsoft payed 14M$ only for a part of the song. For instance, they didn’t use the line ‘You’ll make a grown man cry’.”

“I’m not anti-social; I’m just not user friendly”

“A printer consists of three main parts: the case, the jammed paper tray and the blinking red light”

“The best accelerator available for a Mac is one that causes it to go at 9.81 m/s2.”

“A Windows user spends 1/3 of his life sleeping, 1/3 working, 1/3 waiting.”

“My software never has bugs. It just develops random features.”

“Difference between a virus and windows ? Viruses rarely fail.”

“Evolution is God’s way of issuing upgrades.”

“The only problem with troubleshooting is that sometimes trouble shoots back.”

“It’s a little-known fact that the Y1K problem caused the Dark Ages.”

“The box said ‘Required Windows 95 or better’. So, I installed LINUX.”

“Computer are like air conditioners: they stop working when you open windows.”

“once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary,
over many a strange and spurious site of ‘hot xxx galore’.
While i clicked my fav’rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour,
” ‘Tis not possible!”, i muttered, “give me back my free hardcore!”
quoth the server, 404.”

“Mac users swear by their Mac,
PC users swear at their PC.”

“Like car accidents, most hardware problems are due to driver error.”

“Dating a girl is just like writing software. Everything’s going to work just fine in the testing lab (dating), but as soon as you have contract with a customer (marriage), then your program (life) is going to be facing new situations you never expected. You’ll be forced to patch the code (admit you’re wrong) and then the code (wife) will just end up all bloated and unmaintainable in the end.”

“Real men don’t use backups, they post their stuff on a public ftp server and let the rest of the world make copies.” – Linus Torvalds

“There are 10 kinds of people in the world, those that understand trinary, those that don’t, and those that confuse it with binary.”

“If you give someone a program, you will frustrate them for a day; if you teach them how to program, you will frustrate them for a lifetime.”

“It is easier to change the specification to fit the program than vice versa.”

“I had a fortune cookie the other day and it said: ‘Outlook not so good’. I said: ‘Sure, but Microsoft ships it anyway’.”

“The nice thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from.”
“The term reboot comes from the middle age (before computers). Horses who stopped in mid-stride required a boot to the rear to start again. Thus the term to rear-boot, later abbreviated into reboot.”

“Programmers are tools for converting caffeine into code.”

“The great thing about Object Oriented code is that it can make small, simple problems look like large, complex ones.”

“Hacking is like sex. You get in, you get out, and hope that you didn’t leave something that can be traced back to you.”

I stumbled upon DropSend today,a file sharing site with a difference.

One of the main thing that instantly caught my attention is the ‘Personalized Interface’ feature. With DropSend’s Business plan, you can personalize the file sharing interface, which is great for small or medium companies, all you have to do is just upload your logo and changed the colors to make it look like part of your site.

Once you signed up with one of their plans, your up and running (in 2 minutes they claim) to send files securely over SSL,Choose your own web address using “groupdropbox.com”. For example, if your company name is “Nike”, you could choose “nike.groupdropbox.com”,Store up to 100 GB of files and more!.

The other beautiful thing is you can use it as an online hardrive, and sending files from your desktop to your online storage is a breeze with Dropsend’s desktop tool,by just using the ‘drag and drop’ technique,it’s that easy.

Ryan Carson

After some minor research,i’ve discovered that DropSend is apart of the Carson Systems Ltd.
And Carson Systems Ltd is owned by Ryan Carson.

A little about Ryan:

Colorado born Ryan has lived in the UK for six years. During that time he has worked as lead PHP developer at several design studios. He developed his first web app in 2003 before founding Carson Systems in early 2004. Shortly after that he built his second large-scale web application, the hugely popular DropSend and he is currently working on his third web app, Amigo, due for launch in July. He is live-blogging the development of Amigo over at Bare Naked App.

In 2006 he organised and spoke at the 800-seat conference, The Future of Web Apps and is a passionate advocate of developing forward-thinking web applications.

Ryan writes regularly on the topic of building web apps. His articles appear on several websites including: for A List Apart, Signal Vs Noise (37signals), Design In Flight, Treehouse, and BD4D
Partners

The idea is to harness the knowledge that bloggers typically offer, but that average readers might struggle to find on their own.

And while the site is not old enough yet to be judged a success or failure, it helps point to the enormous opportunity that Internet entrepreneurs see in Web sites that are built on the postings of average people
